The entire world turns to accountants for help in the management of finances. Even the corner store grocer knows the accountant’s competency can mean the difference between a small business becoming a large one, or a family living comfortably. No other professional can efficiently record, analyze and report one’s financial status through tax preparation, financial statements and simply following the money, maintaining stability, maximizing success and forecasting risk.

When you put together your accountant cover letter, it has to immediately demonstrate that you have the background and education for being entrusted with an entity’s financial status. It has to grab the reader’s attention, giving them no choice but to give the resume a thorough review and proving you deserve the interview.

Besides career intentions and qualifications, the accountant cover letter should show your enthusiasm and ability to communicate well. The resume is going to be a clinical history of your experiences. So the cover letter is really your first chance to let hiring managers see you. The cover letter is a great way to introduce yourself in an informal, albeit professional, manner. Avoid reiterating what’s in the resume. You don’t want to give the hiring manager so much information that they can decide right off they don’t need to look at the resume. Mention experiences they match the job description and elaborate on them in ways that cannot be done in the resume. During the last economic downturn, my employer gave me a team of junior accountants for the express purpose of monitoring the Euro as almost 65 percent of our revenue came from there. Over the following year, the team and I found ways to increase company profits in Europe when many companies saw revenue drops by at least two percent.

As with any materials submitted to a hiring manager, brevity is the keyword for a cover letter. Only highlight one or two prominent accomplishments. Give hiring managers an outline of skills that relate to both accounting in general and the position you’re interested in in specific. Treat content like the trailer to next summer’s blockbuster movie, which is your resume. Give hiring managers every reason to want more, making the argument you are the best candidate.

The accountant cover letter is your introduction. Before writing a single word, think about how you want anyone that reads it to see you as a person and not merely as a candidate, and write accordingly. Be concise, be honest and be enthusiastic. Let the resume convince hiring managers you deserve the interview. Use the cover letter to convince them that have to take a closer look at the resume.
