When writing your investment banker cover letter, you need to make sure it looks great. Here’s a cover letter example you can follow.
First, make sure your salutation is all in order. Open the letter with your full name, your contact information including your phone number, and any professional portfolio links such as your LinkedIn. Additionally, use the hiring manager’s name, not just a generic header like “Dear hiring manager.” From there, you can move on to writing the actual cover letter.
The first sentence of your banking cover letter needs to hook the recruiter in. This applicant starts with “When I worked for JP Morgan last year,” a phrase that will catch any banking recruiter’s eye, as JP Morgan is one of the so-called “bulge bracket” of banks that have a truly global reach, alongside Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America. It also includes an impressive metric – the applicant increased a customer’s valuation by over 300% in four months.
Now that the hiring manager is reading, you can include more information about why they should choose you instead of other job seekers. This applicant returns to his special talent – helping companies gain better investors. He also highlights communication skills without stating the phrase, showing the potential employer that he puts skills into practice.
If you had extra achievements you wanted to highlight, then you could put them here, underneath the second paragraph, in bullet points.
Finally, use your closing paragraph to ask for an interview. This applicant requests, “Let me know when I can sit down with you,” giving his potential employer an incentive to reach out to him. Additionally, he indicates that he can provide unique information, saying that he can walk the interviewer through his typical process.
