Build my cover letterGreat scientist cover letter example
So, what should a good scientist cover letter look like? Here’s a science cover letter example that you can use to put yourself ahead of other job seekers.
Dear Mr. Smith,
My love for science stretches back before I was even really cognizant of it, with my parents telling me that I created makeshift scientific experiments in my backyard as a child. As I grew up, I only continued to become more invested, culminating in me deciding to pursue a climate science degree in college and graduating summa cum laude. Now, I want to bring this to your organization as a senior research scientist.
I have been in the field of climate science now for over six years, as I now hold a Master’s in Climate Science & Solutions and have pursued a variety of research programs in that time. I have also worked for the IPCC as a junior researcher, receiving a number of awards and recognitions for my ability to notice changes and keep track of them over time.
I know that my love of science and my desire to understand the Earth is something that has always pushed me forward, driving me further and further toward cutting-edge science. I look forward to having a more in-depth discussion with you about my scientific research and knowledge.
Sincerely,
Merlin Rodriguez
Though this is a fairly short cover letter sample, it gives you a good idea of what a hiring manager is looking for. Here’s how to adapt it to your own needs.
Tips for writing your science cover letter using this example
The first thing you need to do is start the letter with a great cover letter heading. This should include your full name, your contact information, including your phone number, and professional portfolio links, such as your LinkedIn profile. Additionally, address the hiring manager directly by name, rather than using a generic introduction like “To whom it may concern.”
First paragraph: Introduce yourself with a hook and list your best achievements.
From the first sentence, an effective cover letter creates a hook that will get a recruiter to stop and actually read the rest of your cover letter. This applicant does so by describing his passion for science, and also mentioning that he graduated summa cum laude in college, which will definitely get a hiring manager’s attention.
Second paragraph: Give more information about how you’re the best fit for the job.
Now that the hiring manager is actually reading, it’s time to showcase why you’re the ideal candidate. The applicant mentions his college education in climate science and says that he worked for one of the most well-known climate research institutions, the IPCC. This shows that you have the talent and skills to be the best person for the job. If you have other key achievements relevant to your job search, list them here with bullet points.
Third paragraph: Call to action
Last is the call to action. The applicant reiterates his enthusiasm for the position, and directly requests the job interview, stating, “I look forward to having a more in-depth discussion.”

FAQ: Science cover letters
Have questions? We’re here to help.
Do I really need a cover letter to get a scientist job?
It’s always a good idea to submit a cover letter alongside the rest of your job application. Even if the job description doesn’t specifically note that a cover letter is required, it helps your job application look complete. You can find cover letter templates and a great cover letter builder at ResumeHelp if you’re not currently confident in your ability to write a cover letter.
How long should my cover letter be to get a scientist job?
Typically, you should be writing a cover letter that’s about half a page to 3/4 of a page long. This length is long enough that you have more text than white space, but it’s not so long that a recruiter might lose interest.
Does this cover letter example work if I don’t have a lot of experience?
Yes. No matter how much professional experience you have, these examples can help you create the perfect cover letter. Just include whatever experience you do have, like academic, internship or volunteer experience, and even experience in other fields that you can transfer here. In science jobs, it’s common to have to go through a lot of schooling, so academic experience may be a great substitute.
