Whether you’re just beginning a copywriter job search or you’ve been applying for open positions with no luck, follow these five steps to writing all parts of a strong cover letter for a copywriter to give yourself a better chance at landing a job interview:

1. Cover letter header

In your cover letter for copywriter header, prominently display your full name, phone number, location, portfolio link and social media links, such as your LinkedIn profile. The prospective employer will look for your professional contact information to schedule a job interview should you proceed to the next step in the job hiring process. Aligned left at the top of your letter, list the hiring manager’s contact information, as you would do for any recipient when sending a business-type letter.

The introductory paragraph is important because it will either convince the hiring manager to read on or stop. Begin your first paragraph with a catchy hook that includes your most show stopping writing achievements and highlights why you’re the perfect copywriter candidate. For example, you could use a storytelling approach to show your creative copywriting side and grab the reader’s attention. 4. Cover letter body paragraph(s)

In your next paragraph, elaborate on your work experience and the copywriting skills that make you stand out from the competition. Explain key highlights in your copywriting career to date and explain a few of the samples that are presented in your portfolio. If you have measurable accomplishments from recent work, you can use bullet points to make those achievements stand out. This can be about a full campaign or individual copyrighted components that produced quantifiable successful results.

Example:

In my exciting three years of experience writing for clients like Jane’s Flower shop, I have achieved recognition for improved traffic, higher profits, increased business recognition along with continuous client referrals. My creative imagination has helped me take a client’s problem and turn it into a solution through advertising campaigns from print ads and emails to websites and billboards. 5. Closing/Strong call to action

Your cover letter must have a strong call to action (such “I look forward to meeting with you and further discussing my qualifications”) and professional sign-off like “Best Regards.” These are elements that all job seekers should include, no matter the cover letter format.
