Cover letter for copywriter: senior copywriter

Here is another example of a cover letter for a copywriter, targeting a senior copywriter role. Even if you lack the experience to be considered a senior copywriter, you can still use this cover letter sample to create a good cover letter for a junior copywriter, freelance writer, content writer or editor job position.

Remember that ResumeHelp has other copywriter cover letter samples that you can consider if you want more than one example of the best cover letter for a copywriter job application.

Dear Mrs. Allen,

As an experienced copywriter with 14 years of experience writing for high-profile B2B brands, I was excited to see an open position for a copywriter at ExoCol. ExoCol has a reputation for excellence, rigorous growth, and innovative marketing. As such, you need a professional copywriter that can manage tight deadlines and create innovative content that speaks to the needs of your target audience.

In my most recent position with ABC Media, I produced an average of 15,000 SEO-optimized words per week in the form of web content, articles, and blog posts. Over the last year, my content has consistently enjoyed a conversion rate of 6%. This has led to a proportional increase in client acquisitions and income. Because of my strong copywriting skills, I was also looped into the social media marketing team as a content consultant. For this reason, I believe I am the best candidate for this job.

I would love the chance to discuss how I can help in the optimization of your content production and help you get the results you need. I am free to discuss this at any time over the next two weeks and hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience. You can find examples of my work via my professional social media profiles [LinkedIn].

Warm regards,
John Lorne

Copywriter cover letter: 5 key tips

As a copywriter, you know the power of “words”. Your copywriter cover letter is the first step in convincing a potential employer that you’re a great writer and a qualified candidate deserving of a job interview. A rushed cover letter will be noticeable, so take your time and craft a cover letter for a copywriter that demands attention. Here are five key tips you can use to strengthen the content of your cover letter.

1

Lead off with a strong beginning

p>A strong cover letter beginning will set the tone of the rest of your copywriter cover letter. Start your opening paragraph with a hook that immediately catches the hiring manager’s interest, whether it’s an explanation of why you’re excited in the specific company and position, or highlights about your top skills and experience in the industry. Use an elevator pitch approach that says a lot in one to two sentences.

2

Show you understand the company and its needs

Before you start writing your letter, do a bit of homework by visiting the company website to learn more about the company that you’re applying for. Is there something that stands out to you about this particular employer that makes you want to join their team? In your copywriter cover letter, show the hiring manager that you feel a connection to the organization and demonstrate that you understand the company’s culture, mission and goals.

3

Highlight key projects and publications

While your portfolio of writing samples may be impressive, you need to convince the potential employer reading your cover letter that you’re worthy enough to even look at the portfolio. Mention specific achievements you accomplished or recognition that you’ve received. You want the reader to say, “I need to remember this candidate’s name.” Did your content result in higher webpage traffic or a high conversion rate with targeted content? Shout out your most impressive work history while using measurable accomplishments to provide more of an impactful statement.

4

Present a combination of hard and soft skills

Yes, written communication skills are a writer’s greatest asset but there are many more skills needed in the workplace. If you’re joining a busy creative department, you will need to have soft skills like time management, teamwork and interpersonal skills. If you’re writing product sales content, you’ll need to demonstrate persuasive and creative thinking skills. Hard skills or those learned during education or on-the-job training, may include computer-related skills or specific expertise like social media, SEO/SEM, research, editing and email marketing.

5

Proofread your letter

As a writer, you need keen proofreading skills and attention to detail so you must be perfect in your cover letter for copywriter. Read your letter over and over again until you’re sure it’s error-free. Do the same with your accompanying copywriter resume and copywriter job application. You want the hiring manager to see that you’re not only a great copywriter but also detail-oriented.

Write a copywriter cover letter in 5 steps

Whether you’re just beginning a copywriter job search or you’ve been applying for open positions with no luck, follow these five steps to writing all parts of a strong cover letter for a copywriter to give yourself a better chance at landing a job interview:

1. Cover letter header

In your cover letter for copywriter header, prominently display your full name, phone number, location, portfolio link and social media links, such as your LinkedIn profile. The prospective employer will look for your professional contact information to schedule a job interview should you proceed to the next step in the job hiring process. Aligned left at the top of your letter, list the hiring manager’s contact information, as you would do for any recipient when sending a business-type letter.

Example:

Your Name
Your address
City, State Zip code
Your email address
Your phone number
Link to portfolio
Link to professional profile

Date

Hiring manager’s name
Company name
Company address
City, State Zip code

2. Personalized cover letter salutation

When writing a cover letter, take the time to find the hiring manager’s name (hopefully in the job ad) and for your cover letter salutation address the recruiter directly rather than using “Dear Hiring Manager” or other generic salutation. Lead off with a professional “Dear Mr./Dear Mrs./Dear Dr.” form of salutation.

3. Cover letter introductory paragraph

The introductory paragraph is important because it will either convince the hiring manager to read on or stop. Begin your first paragraph with a catchy hook that includes your most show stopping writing achievements and highlights why you’re the perfect copywriter candidate. For example, you could use a storytelling approach to show your creative copywriting side and grab the reader’s attention. In the example below, the writer focuses on major accomplishments and experience.

Example:

I am writing in regards to the copywriter position with Smithfield Advertising Agency. My recent ad for Jane’s Flower Shop which improved the store’s walk-in clients by 20% during the Christmas season, makes me a great candidate to join your community creative team. My out-of-the-box thinking as well as my three years of hands-on experience in the local community as a junior copywriter, make me an excellent fit for this position.

4. Cover letter body paragraph(s)

In your next paragraph, elaborate on your work experience and the copywriting skills that make you stand out from the competition. Explain key highlights in your copywriting career to date and explain a few of the samples that are presented in your portfolio. If you have measurable accomplishments from recent work, you can use bullet points to make those achievements stand out. This can be about a full campaign or individual copyrighted components that produced quantifiable successful results.

Example:

In my exciting three years of experience writing for clients like Jane’s Flower shop, I have achieved recognition for improved traffic, higher profits, increased business recognition along with continuous client referrals. My creative imagination has helped me take a client’s problem and turn it into a solution through advertising campaigns from print ads and emails to websites and billboards. My out-of-the-box, problem-solving skills directly align with attributes I know are important to your advertising agency.

5. Closing/Strong call to action

Your cover letter must have a strong call to action (such “I look forward to meeting with you and further discussing my qualifications”) and professional sign-off like “Best Regards.” These are elements that all job seekers should include, no matter the cover letter format.

Example:

I greatly appreciate you taking the time to consider my application and review my attached portfolio of copywriting samples. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with you further regarding how I can contribute to the continued success of the Smithfield Advertising Agency local creative team.

Yours sincerely,

Patricia M. Jones

FAQ: Copywriter cover letter

Have questions? We’re here to help.

Always remember that a copywriting cover letter is the first impression a potential employer will get about your writing skills. You want to write a cover letter that demonstrates your enthusiasm for writing, the job role and the company that you’re applying for. Be creative in your approach to highlight your most impressive qualifications, skills and past exciting pieces of writing. Do not simply reiterate your work history from your resume. Instead, pick out your best written accomplishments and make your copywriter cover letter stand out.

A great cover letter for copywriter will include:

  1. Opening paragraph providing a quick synopsis of your background, years of experience and motivation for the position you’re applying for.
  2. Body paragraphs further explaining how you meet or exceed the requirements including your most relevant experience, best skills and key accomplishments.
  3. Closing of the letter will thank the reader, mention the name of the job position and include a strong call to action suggesting the prospective employer review your portfolio and call you for an interview.

The examples on this page show you the preferred copywriter cover letter format.

Your copywriting cover letter should be typically between half a page and 3/4 of a page long. Hiring managers and recruiters read dozens of cover letters for each job opening so a cover letter longer than one page, may deter the reader from reading the entire letter. However, a cover letter shorter than half a page will have too much empty white space and you’ll be deemed underqualified for the copywriter job role. Always aim for a cover letter around the perfect length of 3/4 of a page. Look at the cover letter copywriter examples on this page to see how your cover letter should look.

As a professional writer, you should be good at making catchy statements through words. Take a few moments to think about what you want a hiring manager to know about you and what makes you stand out from the competition. Create an opening statement that encapsulates what makes you a special candidate. Perhaps you’ve been writing stories since you were a young child? Maybe you pitched in on a successful marketing campaign on the side? Use your creative imagination to be a memorable copywriter job applicant.

While most copywriter job applicants have the same gift of writing, each will offer something extra that makes them unique. Consider why the potential employer should hire you over all other writers submitting applications? Did you have an accomplishment that no other candidate could have? Has writing been an aspiration of yours for many years? Is it because of your enthusiasm for being creative and thinking outside the box with each new assignment? You want to peak the reader’s interest so they are interested enough in your brand to look at your professional portfolio of work.

Yes. Most job applications will request a cover letter, but even if it doesn’t, it’s always worth it to write a cover letter to get a copywriter position. A copywriting cover letter is your chance to supplement your resume with additional information that matches the needs of the job description and explain how you can specifically benefit the company. Look at the well-written cover letter copywriter examples on this page for inspiration to write your own good cover letter.

As well as information about your most important skills, experiences and achievements thus far, include your full name, your phone number and any other relevant contact information. Furthermore, when discussing your skills and achievements, do not ignore soft skills such as collaboration and attention to detail. These transferable skills can help set you apart. If you need some inspiration, look at a copywriter cover letter sample on this page.

To write a cover letter with no experience, focus on previous jobs and roles in which you have honed your writing skills and technique. Highlight internships or any volunteer work when you may have written any kind of communications. Perhaps you helped write social media posts for a previous employer or created posters for a community event. Be sure to mention any relevant training such as copywriting online courses or a college degree in English or any related subject.
