If you’re interested in starting a career as a model, it’s important that you know how to write a fashion model resume. Whether you’re writing directly to a company or you’re working with a modeling agency, it’s a good idea to know how to create a model resume. Here’s what you need to know about creating a model resume, using our tips and examples.

What to highlight in a Model Resume

While many people think that being pretty is the most important part of a modeling job, the process is much more complicated than this. Every campaign is looking for a different model, and a fashion model might not need all the same qualifications as a runway model. You should highlight your ability to do whatever modeling job you’re applying for, as well as other skills like your communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Structure of a Model Resume

Every resume structure will be a bit different depending on your resume format. You can choose between three resume formats: the chronological resume format which focuses on your work history, the functional resume which focuses on your skills, and the combination resume which focuses on both. Regardless of the format you choose, you can use these resume sections.

This section of the resume includes basic information about you. Include your full name,  phone number, email address and any job networking or portfolio links, including LinkedIn.

Resume summary or objective

This section includes your resume summary or resume objective. It’s a short two or three-sentence paragraph that features your absolute best experience and accomplishments. You will include modeling experience, a well-known fashion designer you worked with or assignments in famous locations. The summary or objective will encompass the most important parts of your resume and because of its placement, recruiters will see it immediately.

The skills section in a model resume may be different from the skills for other jobs and industries. Here are a few skills to consider when writing your model resume:

  • Walked fashion runways
  • Mastered photoshoot poses
  • Patiently takes direction
  • Time management
  • Works well with stylists
  • Prompt
  • Team player

Whether you’re a model who poses for commercial photo shoots or you walk the runway in the fashion industry, hiring managers want to know you’re qualified for the job you are applying to. List both hard skills and soft skills so you stand out among other model candidates.

Work history

This section should list all of your fashion industry experience. This may include working for the New York Fashion Week, local photoshoots or being part of a modeling agency. To make it easier for the hiring manager to see your career progression, list your experience it in reverse chronological order.

In this section, include any relevant modeling training or other academic certifications or degrees. Some aspiring models may have a degree in design, fashion merchandising or photography. You may include your high school diploma if you have no college experience or other training.

Do's and Don’ts for a Model Resume

  • Read the job description completely before you apply A to jobs where you’re not qualified may not be beneficial to your modeling career.
  • Create a portfolio of your best modeling work. With the variety of portfolio websites available, creating an online portfolio is easier than ever.
  • Incorporate modeling experience from as many different genres and locations as possible. Showcasing work from New York to Los Angeles shows you’re willing to travel and demonstrates that you use the skills listed on your resume.
  • Send a headshot that isn’t professional. Invest in getting professional headshots to accompany your resume and job application.
  • Leave off a college degree because it seems irrelevant. Any college degree will impress a hiring manager.
  • Try to create the perfect resume on your own. ResumeHelp’s resume builder offers you more than one dozen resume templates to choose from.

FAQ: Model Resumes

Have questions? We’re here to help.

Yes. You should always submit a cover letter for your applications. It’s an effective way to get ahead of other job seekers (who don’t include a cover letter) and show off your modeling skills and accomplishments. Use the cover letter builder from ResumeHelp to create a cover letter more effectively.

If you don’t have much experience modeling, you should instead rely on your most relevant skills and create a portfolio. Investing in a professional photoshoot will help you build an impressive portfolio.

There are many different types of modeling jobs out there. It’s important that your resume writing reflects each job listing. Resume keywords reflect what a hiring manager is looking for when reading a job candidate’s resume so creating your model resume template around those keywords benefits your chances of getting an interview or audition. Simply read the job posting carefully and match the skills and job requirements to the wording on your model resume.
