The first step of creating a perfect resume is to find a structure that works for you. There are three resume formats that you can choose from:
- Functional: If you are a candidate who doesn’t have an extensive level of work experience as an internal auditor or has gaps in their employment history, choosing a functional resume format will work well for you. This resume format allows you to focus on the largest section of your resume, your skill set.
- Chronological: If you’re a seasoned professional at the job you are applying for and have a high level of experience, choosing a chronological resume format will help you center your resume around your work history.
- Combination: If you are moving into an internal audit career, you can opt for the combination resume format. With this resume format, you can provide an equal balance of your experience and skills.
Once you have selected your resume format, you can write the resume sections:
The header section of your resume will hold all the contact information your potential employer will need. You should include your name, phone number and email address that you check regularly. Also include your professional social media links, such as your LinkedIn profile. Be sure that all of your information is accurate.
The next section is a resume summary. The purpose of a resume summary is to briefly let the employer know about your biggest and most relevant achievements that make you a great candidate for the position. Here is an example of an internal auditor’s resume summary:
“Knowledgeable internal auditor with three years of experience running audit reports and completing risk assessments. This diligence and commitment led to improving auditing standards and audit procedures at Company Name, while recommendations improved internal controls.”
Your skills section should include soft skills, such as interpersonal skills, and technical skills, like financial analysis. Paying attention to the job description will ensure that you include skills that the hiring manager requires. Here are some examples of common skills that you may find on an internal auditor resume:
- Ability to prepare papers for audit findings
- Evaluate business processes
- Knowledge of financial reporting and financial statements
- Risk management
- Develop audit planning and audit programs
- Perform financial audits
- Develop and prepare working papers in line with audit methodology
- Prepare budgets
- Conduct compliance audits and external audits
- Experience working with external auditors, senior management and stakeholders
- Knowledge of GAAP and IIA

Your work history section should detail all the experience you have that makes you a fit for an auditor job. Stating this experience in reverse-chronological order will be helpful to both yourself and the hiring manager, as they will be able to find your most recent and relevant experience first. List 3-5 bullet points for each job outlining your responsibilities and best achievements. Also include the company name, your job title and the dates of employment.
Each job will have different educational requirements, so consider the requirements before applying. However, it is expected that many internal auditor hiring managers will require a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, such as IT. You may also have a Certified Internal Auditor certificate that will give you more specific internal auditing knowledge. List all your degrees and certifications to improve your chances of impressing the recruiter.
