Write a finance cover letter in 5 steps
Every cover letter you write should be tailored for the finance position that you’re applying for. In other words, don’t just send the same cover letter with every job opening. You want to be sure the information you include proves that you’re a qualified candidate and that you meet all the job requirements as listed in the job ad. While all letters will say something slightly different, you will follow the same format and sections of the letter. Here are 5 steps to follow for all finance cover letters:
1. Cover letter heading
The header should contain all relevant contact information such as:
- Your name
- Your phone number
- Your email address
- Your link to a portfolio or LinkedIn profile page
You’ll also need to include the contact information of the hiring manager or the company including the hiring manager’s name, company name, title and email address, along with the company address.
Example:
John Smith
123 Main St.
Los Angeles, CA, 12345
Cell: (123) 456-7890
johnsmith@email.com
2. Cover letter salutation
Address the letter directly to the hiring manager, recruiter or potential employer’s full name. This shows you have taken the time to research the company you are applying to. Hiring managers go through dozens of applications daily so you can create a more personal connection with the reader of your cover letter.
Example:
3. Cover letter introductory paragraph
When writing the first paragraph of a cover letter, you need to grab the reader’s attention. Start with your elevator pitch right away. What do you excel at? Mention a top experience or two that applies to the financial position you want. Explain how you can benefit the hiring company.
Example:
As a finance analyst professional with over 10 years of experience, I believe that I am a good fit for the senior finance analyst position at Example Bank. Having provided my analyst services for more than 50 long term clients with a 98% customer retention rate, I’m confident that I can do the same for your successful company.
4. Cover letter body paragraph(s)
In your body paragraphs, you will brag about some of your most impressive achievements as a definite way to stand out from the competition. Elaborate on the experiences and skill set that fit the position you want. Demonstrate your financial know-how by going more in-depth into what you’ve accomplished at previous firms or companies. Make sure you’re concise. Cover letters should express who you are as a potential candidate with a few brief paragraphs.
Example:
I have advanced through several challenging positions within the finance field. My background includes key roles as a Teller in New York Bank and a Financial Analyst at Wells Fargo, which have allowed me to master my communication skills, team development, and leadership abilities.
In my most recent position as a financial analyst at Wells Fargo, I supported the senior analyst team via market research, client outreach, and setting up meetings between managers and executives. I not only assisted customers with my enhanced interpersonal and customer service skills but my accounting and forecasting skills helped senior staff boost revenue by 10%, exceeding our quarterly goals for five consecutive years.
5. Cover letter closing and sign-off
In the final paragraph, reiterate your enthusiasm for the position and emphasize how you believe you would be a good fit. Finish your letter strongly with a call to action; your sign-off should urge the recruiter to reach out to you for a job interview.
Example:
My passion for numbers and knack for forecasting patterns will help me make a smooth transition into your company’s senior finance analyst position. Senior staff at my present company can attest to my dedicated work ethic and how they repeatedly request my services. Thank you for considering me. Please do not hesitate to reach out to schedule an interview at your earliest convenience. I am looking forward to hearing more about this exciting opportunity.
End your cover letter for finance with a formal sign-off line, such as “Sincerely” or “Best Regards.”
Example:
Sincerely,
John Smith
